First Grade

Math Curriculum

Color & shape - Learning additional Color names depending on various blending of Color, identifying and describing various shapes, identifying solid shapes - sphere, cube, cylinder, 3 and 4 sided pyramid, identifying figures that are the same size and shape, writing a fraction to tell what part of a figure is shaded (1/2, 1/4,1/3,1/6,1/8 and 1/10), writing a fraction to tell what part of a set of objects has a given characteristic

Pattern & Function - Making designs and patterns, selecting objects, Color or numbers that come next in a given pattern, using and describing pattern shapes

Space & Position - Distinguishing right and left, telling which items are in front of, in back of, between and beside objects, following directions using up, down, across, and on the diagonal

Numbers & Counting Skills - Counting on and back from a given number, counting objects and matching a set to a number, verbal counting and writing the standard numeral to 100 (and beyond), determining which of two numbers (0-100) is less or greater, counting by 1, 2, 5 and 10, grouping in tens and ones , knowing the basic addition facts for the sums through to 18, knowing the basic subtraction facts, subtracting from 18 or less, solving word problems by relating addition and subtraction to real situations, adding three addends, adding 2-digit numbers when no regrouping is required, -subtracting 2-digit numbers when no regrouping is required, reading and interpreting word problems, solving problems of multiplication relating facts to real situations

Time, Measurement and Money - Telling time when the minute hand is at the hour, half and quarter hour, telling time when the hand is at the five-minute mark, measuring using a common unit (non-standard), measuring using the metric system, measuring volume and capacity, using coins and notes in play situations, using Italian money in real life situations and giving the value for coins and notes

Data Handling - Recording information on block graphs, using the tally system in gathering information, interpreting pictograms and graphs, reading information on tables and schedules, recording information in table form, using Venn diagrams in discussing sets and relationship

Language Curriculum

,b> Types of Reading - storytelling, fact and fiction

Literature Focus - What is storytelling?, What is research? (researching creatures in their natural habitats), Stories (ex. about animals, Rome) Are they fact or fiction?

Speaking and Listening
Pupils are introduced to :

  1. Participating as speakers/listeners in a group in a variety of activities
  2. Describing an event real or imagined
  3. Learning and applying common courtesy in their manner of speaking both to adults and classmates
  4. Listening attentively to stories, poetry and information and being able to comment on, give opinion and retell story
  5. Talking to and carrying on a conversation with adults
  6. Listening to, asking and answering questions
  7. Speaking or presenting before a group and taking part in creative dramatics
  8. Speaking clearly
  9. Using increasingly precise vocabulary
  10. Following complex instructions given by the teacher

Reading
Pupils are introduced to:

  1. Reading and understanding signs, labels and notices in the classroom
  2. Demonstrating a knowledge of the alphabet, its order and using simple dictionaries
  3. Using increasing semantic, phonetic and structural skills to become an effective reader
  4. Describing what has happened in a story and predicting what may happen next
  5. Developing an interest in a variety of reading material - both literature and non-fiction
  6. Reading a range of material with some independence, fluency, accuracy and understanding
  7. Reading aloud with expression
  8. Reading silently
  9. In library skills, being responsible for books taken home and understanding author/title/illustrator and fiction/non-fiction

Writing
Pupils are introduced to:

  1. Understanding the writing process
  2. Writing independently and developing ideas using complete sentences demarcated with capital letters and punctuation
  3. Structuring coherently real or imagined events in a chronological account
  4. Producing more complex sentences using further description
  5. Writing words and simple sentences in response to dictation
  6. Organizing simple research writing
  7. Forming cursive letters and completing the transition from printing to cursive style
  8. Spacing words correctly
  9. Spelling correctly during the course of their writing, words that they use regularly and simple monosyllabic words
  10. Recognizing that spelling has patterns and applying that knowledge in attempts to spell a wider range of word

Science Curriculum

Living Things - Earth’s Creatures in Habitats

Earth and Space - Water Recycling

Materials, Forces and Energy - Sound, Movement Forces, Machines

Health/Body - Exercise, Safety, Hearing

Social Studies Curriculum


The child will:
  1. Build and develop an understanding of the interaction between geographical and historical settings.
  2. Be provided the opportunity to appreciate and investigate the local environment and its work force.
  3. Be encouraged to develop empathy and respect for the world around them.
  4. Develop an awareness and appreciation of cultural heritages with their peer group.

Music Curriculum


To be able to:
  1. Maintain a steady beat
  2. Match pitches to simple melodies
  3. Melody movement--up, down, stays the same
  4. Have correct singing posture
  5. Distinguish musical instruments and voices
  6. Move appropriately to rhythms and music at level

Physical Education curriculum

  1. To create a positive attitude towards all movement activities and games, thereby fostering a spirit of participation in physical activity later in life.
  2. To develop and improve all fitness components: physical and skill.
  3. To broaden the students perspective of physical games by exposing them to some of the new and innovative areas in physical education programs

Art Curriculum

The Art programme will include work with drawing, painting, sculpture and collage/design. Students will explore the possibilities of a wide variety of materials and techniques.
